Use the Fill in the Blank tool to allow students to type answers directly on a slide.
You can optionally set correct answers and assign points for automatic grading.
This is regarding the Fill in the Blank tool for Plain Text.
Please see this article for information on the STEM Fill in the Blank tool: STEM Fill in the Blank
1) Use the Fill in the Blank Tool
1. Open the assignment and click Edit.
2. Click the Add Fill in the Blank icon in the toolbar.
3. Click anywhere on the slide to place the answer box.
4. (Optional) Click + ADD ACCEPTABLE ANSWER to set a correct response.
5. (Optional) Enter point values in the Set Points box.
NOTE:
-
You do not have to add an acceptable answer.
If no correct answer is set, the box simply functions as a response field for students.
-
Fill in the Blank answers are not case-sensitive.
For example, yes, YES, and Yes will all be counted as correct if Yes is set as an acceptable answer.
2) View Student Answers and Grades
In a student's slide:
- Correct Fill in the Blank answers will be outlined in green
- Incorrect Fill in the Blank answers will be outlined in red.
Total points earned appear at the top of the slide.
In the View Work tab, you can see:
- Total points for the assignment (next to username).
- Total points received on the slide (bottom left).
Teachers can also change the summary for viewing the slides' points.
1. Click on the Change Summary icon for any of the slides.
2. Select the option for how you wish to see the summary of the slides' points.
3) Control Whether Students See Scores
Teachers control whether students can see if their answers are correct and whether they can see their total score.
If Points is toggled ON, students can see:
Their response marked correct/incorrect
Their total score
To adjust this:
1. Go to the Assign tab for the assignment.
2. Toggle the Points feature on or off.
NOTE: Students can update or change their answers at any time, regardless of whether Points is enabled.
Check out this article written for students about whether they can see their points and to see what it looks like for students if you have the Points feature turned on.
4) Add an Acceptable Answer from a Student Response
If a student submits an answer that should be marked correct, but was not added in your list of acceptable answers, you can quickly add it.
To add a student's incorrect answer to your list of acceptable answers,
1. Click the triangle icon next to the incorrect answer.
2. Click OK in the popup.
3. The response will be added to the list of acceptable answers.
- Any student with that response will now have their answer marked correct automatically.
This is helpful when students enter valid alternate wording.
5) Fill in the Blank Box Not Appearing for Student
If one or two students are not seeing the Fill in the Blank box on their assignment, you may need to "reset" the boxes:
1. Click into the assignment.
2. In Edit mode, navigate to the slide(s) with the missing Fill in the Blank boxes.
3. Click and drag the Fill in the Blank box(es) back and forth on the canvas.
This should help sync the boxes so that they will then appear on the students' view.
If the issue continues, Submit a Support Request.
